How to search for materials Q&A version

Specific questions related to searching for materials are answered here.
  1. I would like to show images of Japanese New Year in my lessons. How should I search for photos, pictures and videos?

By inputting ‘New Year’ and doing a keyword search from the ‘pictures, photos, realias and videos’ category, materials related to New Year can be found from pictures, photos, realias and videos. It is also possible to refine a search further and search for a keyword from ‘Photos’ if only photos are wanted.

How to search from category, type, and teaching material can be seen at a glance here

If you select ‘All Materials’ and input ‘New Year’ in the top of the website, you can search using keyword search for photos, classroom activities, and reading comprehension materials all at once.

Tips for searching keywords are found here

  2. How should I search for speaking activities? In refined search, in what way are ‘Conversation’ under ‘Activity aim’ and ‘Speaking’ under ‘Skills used in activity’ different?

In refined search it is possible to search for materials by checking one or more of the following 6 items: ‘Activity aim’, ‘Skills used in activity’, ‘Activity type’, ‘Activity level’, ‘Activity topic’ and ‘Material type’. In ‘Activity aim’ it is possible to refine which ability learners are required to develop from ‘Vocabulary’, ‘Grammar and sentence patterns’, ‘Conversation’, etc.. In ‘Skills used in activity’, without any relation to aims, it is possible to refine which skills are used in the activity from ‘Speaking’, ‘Listening and watching’, ‘Writing’ and ‘Reading’.

An explanation of refined search items can be found here

In refined search how should I differentiate the way I use ‘Conversation’ under ‘Activity aims’ and ‘Speaking’ under ‘Skills used in activities’?
For example, in a lesson where learners study sentence patterns, if you want them to practise making conversations using the sentence patterns, you should check ‘Grammar and sentence patterns’ under ‘Activity aim’ and ‘Speaking’ under ‘Skills used in activity’! If you would like your learners to practise sentence patterns by listening to audio, check ‘Listening and watching’ under ‘Skills used in activities’.
When should I choose ‘Conversation’ under ‘Activity aim’?
You should choose ‘Conversation’ under ‘Activity aim’ when you want to search for materials and activities that develop speaking ability. Choose ‘Conversation’ not just for interactive language activities involving two or more people, but also for individual productive activities, such as speeches and presentations.
OK, so when I want to do an activity that develops a speaking skill at elementary level, for example, is this OK? Or do I need to choose ‘Skills used in activity’ as well?
You don’t need to check ‘Skills used in activity’! You can search without checking every search item. When you’ve already decided the type of activity, such as an interview or a speech, you can refine your search through ‘Activity type’. And when you’ve already decided the theme of an activity, you can refine your search through ‘Activity topic’.
  3. I cannot find reading texts that suit my learners. Am I right in thinking that the ‘Minna no Kyozai’ website has very few reading comprehension materials?

Reading texts are not just found in ‘Reading Comprehension’, but are also found in ‘Classroom Activities’, so please search from ‘Classroom Activities and Reading Comprehension’. If searching from ‘Reading Comprehension’, it is not possible to find reading texts found in ‘Classroom Activities’.

How to search from category, type, and teaching material can be seen at a glance here

So that means I shouldn’t search for reading comprehension teaching materials from the ‘Reading comprehension’ category only?
That’s right. There are actually more than 100 sets of reading comprehension materials found in ‘Classroom Activities’!Please search for reading comprehension materials from the ‘Classroom Activities and Reading Comprehension’ category.

More information about ‘Searching from the whole website’ can be found here

  4. I am going to teach agemasu, kuremasu and moraimasu. How should I search for materials?

It is easy to search from ‘Grammar and sentence patterns’. It is possible to search for learning materials for those language points from a list of grammar and sentence patterns. For each language point, under ‘Related grammar and sentence patterns’, there are also links to grammar and sentence patterns that are often taught together with or have similar meaning or form to that language point.

More information about ‘Searching by grammar and sentence patterns’ can be found here

There aren’t any pictures in ‘Search by grammar and sentence patterns’, but in the ‘Minna no Kyozai’ website there are lots of pictures that are useful for teaching grammar and sentence patterns! The way to search for pictures can be found in Search from type in the Explanation version and (1) in the Q&A version.
There are not only grammar explanations for the language point agemasu, but also lots of other things like classroom activities and reading comprehension materials as well. It’s useful that you can also instantly search for materials related to kuremasu and moraimasu from ‘Related grammar and sentence patterns’.
Right, being able to look at reference materials in one place is really convenient.
There aren’t any pictures in ‘Search by grammar and sentence patterns’, are there?
  5. There are a lot of people in my class who are interested in travel, so I would like to do a lesson on travel. How should I search for materials from ‘Search by topic’?

In ‘Search by topic’ materials are arranged into fifteen separate topics, such as ‘Me and my family’, ‘Eating habits’, ‘Health’, and so on. If you are interested in travel, please take a look at the topic ‘Travel and transport’. ①How to use refined search

It is possible to check items from six fields, including ‘Activity aim’, ‘Activity type’, and ‘Activity level’. The more items that are checked, the fewer the search results (AND searches). It is not necessary to check all items. Please only check the items needed.

It is also possible to check one item several times. The more checks on one item, the greater the search results (OR searches).

When I checked ‘Interview’ in ‘Activity type’, 39 items of Classroom Activities appeared! When I checked ‘Role-play’ as well, it increased to 65 results (OR search).
Let‘s try checking some other items. If you check ‘First half of elementary level’ under ‘Activity level’, the number of results changes to 41.

    ②Refined search items

    【Activity aim】

Refine a search by ‘Activity aim’ that shows the kind of ability that learners acquire through the materials or activities. For example, if searching for controlled speaking practice in order to remember a new sentence pattern, choose ‘Grammar and sentence patterns’ as the ‘Activity aim’ not ‘Conversation’. If searching for practice that deals with a conversational situation that the new sentence pattern appears in, choose ‘Conversation’ as the ‘Activity aim’. All materials have some sort of ‘Activity aim’.The following are the eight ‘Activity aim’:

Characters Vocabulary Grammar and sentence patterns Conversation*1
Listening comprehension Composition*2 Reading comprehension Cultural understanding

Includes all speaking. This is not just interaction between two or more people, but is also individual production, such as speeches and presentations.

Includes all writing, such as writing e-mails and letters.

    With Can-dos

Check this when searching for materials with Can-do objectives. It is also possible to search for materials with Can-do objectives by inputting ‘Can-do’when doing a keyword search.

Can-dos display Japanese language proficiency using sentences beginning with ‘I can ...’ that say what someone can do and how well in Japanese. It is possible to concretely understand what the objective is in terms of what someone will become able to do in real life.

    Read about Can-dos here

*The ‘JFS Lesson Plans’ also have Can-do objectives, but they cannot be searched from a refined search. ‘JFS Lesson Plans’ can be found here

The way to search with category, type and teaching materials at a glance can be found here

It is possible using the ‘Minna no Can-do’ website to check the learning required to accomplish each of the materials’ Can-do objectives, and check useful information for thinking about assessment.

If you click the material’s Can-do objective, you can see ‘Related Can-dos’ and ‘Can-dos in the same category’ on the ‘Mina no Can-do’ website. ‘Related Can-dos’ and ‘Can-dos in the same category’ are useful for checking the learning required to accomplish the Can-do objectives, and checking useful information for thinking about assessment.

    See here for more details

    ‘Skill used in the activity’

‘Skill used in the activity’ is separate from ‘Activity aim’ and is the Japanese language skill used in the activity. For example, ‘listening’ to the words the teacher says, ‘writing’ notes of verb conjugations, ‘reading’ a role-play role card, and so on. All materials have some sort of ‘Skill used in the activity’.

‘Skill used in the activity’ can be one of the following four skills:
